All About The SIGNS!!!

Hi Girls and Boys,
Welcome back from Thanksgiving break.  I hope you all had a great time with family and friends and are eager to learn.  This is one of the most important concepts that will make your math career easy or hard so let's really learn this stuff.  And remember, when do you use these Rules???? Whenever you see a Negative or Subtraction sign!  There are 4 shortcuts and I am hoping you find these helpful.
Same Signs - Different Signs - Double Signs - Multiply/ Divide
Each of these 4 shortcuts has 2 rules

Same Signs                            Different Signs
1. Add digits                          1. Subtract digits
2. Add sign                            2. Take sign of larger digit

Double Signs
1. Turn double signs to single signs
2. Go to same signs or different signs

 Multiply or Divide
1. Multiply or divide as usual
2. Count the negative signs
     * if odd number of negative signs- the answer is negative
     * if even number of negative signs- the answer is postive
Now go through the videos and write the above rules and the examples from the videos on each rule.  I will be checking this in the morning so make sure you do so.

These are Alex's pets, Molly and Stewie! Aren't they adorable?

CHAPTER 3 Integers!!! Number Systems

Good day Girls and Boys,

Today we embark on a new chapter called INTEGERS!  This is a review from 6th grade but it is so important to understand just what integers are!  Integers are Whole Numbers- so no fractions or decimals allowed in this group. Integers can be both positive and negative!  So on a number line, 0 cuts the line into the positive numbers and the negative numbers.  In this chapter you will be able to calculate all 4 of the operations ( + - x /) with integers, but also learn what they really represent.
Our second vocabulary term is Absolute Value.  Absolute Value is the DISTANCE from that number and 0.  Distance can only be positive, so Absolute Value is always positive.  We will go over this in class but ask questions if you do not understand this.
There will be a pop quiz over these videos on Thursday so make sure you do a nice job on your notes!

This little sweetheart belongs to Ellie. Look at her smile!

Homework: Read the blog, watch the videos and take notes in your new graphic organizer.

Simple Interest

Dear girls and boys,
Oops, I made a mistake, last lesson was NOT the final lesson,
this one is! Sorry.
This lesson is about interest earned or paid.  It is based on percents so that is why this lesson is in this chapter on PERCENTS.  Interest can be made when save money in a bank, the bank pays a small interest to you for letting them use your money, or it can be paid out if you take out a loan.  So you will need to figure the interest rate and then either add to the balance or subtract from the balance.   There are several vocabulary terms for this lesson. Principal is the first term and No, it is not Mr Riley.  When you are talking money, principal is the money either  deposited or  borrowed.  Simple Interest is the money paid or earned from that loan or deposit.  There is a universal formula on how to figure out interest.  This is I = PRT.  In words, this is Interest = Principal * Rate * Time.  We will go over this in class as well as the videos. Ask QUESTIONS!!!!
And meet Raven, Callie's little kitty.... I think you need to look hard to find her!

DISCOUNT

Good Day Girls and Boys,
As promised, this LAST lesson in this chapter on Percents is talking out Discount, that is the subtracting from the beginning costs.  Discount is the amount that is reduced from the cost.  We are all familiar with discounts as they are often referred to as a Sale.  And all of us love a bargain!
Figuring out this is much like the other lesson on Sales Tax, Tip, and Markup, but in reverse where the percent is taken off.  This is my kind of percent!

Meet Ellie !  She is playing with her little toy and looking pretty content sharing Sadie's bed! What a little sweetie!

Homework: Read the blog, watch the videos and take notes in your graphic organizers.

Sales Tax, Tips, and Markup

Dear Girls and Boys,
We are now working on some of the REAL WORLD examples of percents using Sales Tax, Tips and Markup.  You must be very familiar with sales tax if you have ever bought anything in a store.  The price on the tag is not the price you actually pay as a certain percent of money is added to most items you buy.  This money goes to the state or federal governments so they can spend money on needed projects.  Along with sales tax, tips are also a percent of money added to a meal that you eat at a restaurant. This payment is for good service and it goes to the waitress as part of her pay.  I bet you have seen your parents add a tip to their bills when you go out to eat.  Markup is what a store needs to add to the goods to make a profit that goes to expenses for the business.  So, this lesson is on money that is added on to the price of goods and the next one will be about money that you take off as in a sale!
