Hi Welcome to the Stroudwater River TEAM!

Hello Everybody,
It is so nice having you here.  We are off to an exciting new year of learning and wonderment.  You will be watching many videos on instruction on concepts as well as other real life connections to math.  We will be  starting off slow and soon you will be pros at this blog, the videos and the routine of your math class. Welcome aboard to the 2016/2017 STROUDWATER TEAM!

In math we will be starting off with Rates and Proportional Thinking.  Blowing out the cobwebs from the long summer break, can you recall what rates are?  Rates are common place in your life and you see and use them frequently.  When  you play sports, you are applying rates. When you sing or play songs or instruments, you are using rates.  When you go shopping, you are using rates.  Rates surround you in everyday life.  For example; if you buy a gatorade for $1.29.  This rates is 1.29 for 1. Here you are comparing the drink to the price.  If you win run a 5K, your speed ( rate ) could be 5k in 2 hours.  The rate is kilometer per time.  And lastly, if you read music, you may be looking at 4 beats per measure.  This is another example of rate.  Rate is the comparison of two DIFFERENT units.  The second vocabulary term for this  lesson is Unit Rate.  A unit rate is when you have a denominator of 1 unit.  Having a denominator of one makes it so you can easily compare one thing to the other.  For example: Cereals at the store are all different sized boxes.  If I know what 1 ounce of EACH cereal cost, then I can decide which box I would like to purchase if I am looking at cost.  Unit Rates are often taped onto grocery shelves for most products. This can really help shoppers get the best bargain. .
Watch the videos and take notes in your graphic organizer for LESSON 1.  Take Pride in this Product and do your best work always.
